<div id="Title" style="text-align: center;">LE PRINCE, DISAPPEARED</div>\
<hr>
<div id="article"><tt><span class="dropCap">A</span>s of September 16, that is, three months ago, the house of Le Prince is now one person quieter. Augustin Le Prince disappeared this past weekend on a train from Dijon to Leeds and no one is quite sure where he went. It's true. Augustin Le Prince disappeared in what seems to be one of the greatest movie twists of all time. But there's no way to look behind the scenes; after supposedly boarding a train from Dijon to Leeds, he was never seen again.
Although we may never know what <i>really</i> happened to him, this game outlines the possible circumstances around his disappearance and what could have happened. There are currently four ideas speculated about what happened to Augustin Le Prince; play through the game to discover all four, and make your own decisions about the father of the moving picture.

Gus,
I pray this letter finds you well, in whatever workshop or study you find yourself in these days. We miss you dearly here in the Americas, and we hope for your return every day, though we know you are using your precious time in Leeds for greater things.
Marie and the rest of the children have helped me transform Jumel Mansion, and truly made it our new home. There's even a large ballroom that would be perfect for shows.
We are eager for your visit to America later this month and hope for a safe trip.
With love,
Lizzie Whitley-Le Prince

Dear Thomas Edison,
[[How are you?|write to edison How are you]]

</span>You walk towards the machine in the middle of the room.
It looks like a ticketbox, like something that could potentially dispense slips of paper. It's a large wooden box on spindly legs. But you know better than that. You notice the windows of the workshop are blocked with pieces of fabric and paper. Why would a ticket machine be so well hidden in this workshop?
You know that this machine is of great value, as it's the first motion picutre machine ever made. It's the first projector that can replicate real-life pictures that move, and in the opposite corner is the first 16-lense camera that is necessary to record movies.
There doesn't seem to be any "movie" in the machine at the moment.
<<if visited("gelatine frames")>>\
But you see some shards of glass left over and you throw them away before someone notices and [[consider your other options|workshop]].
<<elseif visited("plastic spindles")>>\
But there's still the smell of burning plastic in the air. Aaah, what a lovely smell in the afternoon. You take one more whiff before [[considering your other options|workshop]].
<<elseif visited("neither")>>\
But you know better than to try and put a movie in there. You take one more look before [[considering your other options|workshop]].
<<else>>\
You consider [[working on it|do some work]] or [[finding something else to do|workshop]].
<</if>>You see a panel on the back of the machine is open and glance inside.
Evidently, there's nothing in the machine that would make it show any kind of moving picture. You decide to try putting something in there to see what happens.
You notice some [[glass frames with gelatin on them|gelatine frames]] on a nearby table with some images on them and another [[set of plastic spindles|plastic spindles]] that have a row of photos on them.
<<if visited("read articles")>>
You debate which would work better, or if [[neither of them will work|neither]].
<</if>>\You gently pick up the gelatine frames and place them in a compartment they fit in to nicely in the machine.
You close the back panel and flick a switch you assume to be the power after shutting off the lights in the workshop.
You hear some whirring before seeing a few quick frames on the bedsheet hung opposite the projector. Some people appear to be moving around a garden.
Suddenly, the picture stops and you hear the sound of glass cracking and crashing to the floor. Upon investigation, the glass panes jammed up in the machine and got stuck, causing some to fall out and break on the ground.
You look around guiltily even though no one's there and clean up the mess and [[standing back up|workshop]].You pick up the plastic spindles and let them fall into place on the machine. Standing back, you think that everything fits very well.
It makes sense too-- going from spool to spool seems like an efficient way to display frames. You hit a switch that you assume turns on the machine and lo, it does.
You watch as a few frames flicker into place on the blank wall opposite the machine. A man starts walking around a garden before you start to smell something suspicious.
Almost immediately you see a few wisps of smoke rise from the machine and the picture start to yellow and distort. In the same moment, you turn off the machine and rush over.
Inspecting the damage you see that the plastic was not strong enough to withstand the focused heat from the projector light. Evidently you'll have to find something else to use.
You sigh and clean up the mess, but make sure not to throw anything away for fear of spies stealing your ideas. Even the bad ones.
Then you stand up and [[look around your workshop|workshop]].You recall an article you read about photography and other scientific advancements. You also remember the article explaining how //neither// the glass panes nor the plastic spindles could work for what you're trying to do.
While you aren't sure what //would// work, you know it's not anything you have in the shop. You hope there's someone else doing that kind of research.
You shrug and [[look for something else to do|workshop]].You pick up one of the sketches. It's an incredibly intricate yet well labeled. It appears to be some kind of machine that projects images in some way.
[img[https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/eb/Sketch_of_three-lens_Le_Prince_camera_by_James_Longley.jpeg/800px-Sketch_of_three-lens_Le_Prince_camera_by_James_Longley.jpeg]]
You consider [[taking the sketches|take sketches]] or [[leaving them there|leave sketches]].You nod, trying to understand the technical jargon, and you manage to understand it for the most part.
One of the science articles explains the use of gelatine as an exposure method for photography and how fragile the glass is that the gelatine sits on.
Another article from a photography magazine explains a new kind of film being developed that's both clearer and more flexible than previous films, a kind of film that is wound around in a cylinder for use.
You consider [[taking the articles with you|take articles]] or [[leaving them on the table|leave articles]].You walk into your workshop a few minutes away from your house.
<<if $week2[0] < 4>>\
While it looks clean, there are materials sprawled everywhere in organized chaos. You've been rather focused on the machine past week, so there are a lot of different parts of the project everywhere.

I thank you immensely for your previous sending. The sketches and blueprints make complete sense as I see them sitting here on my desk.
You did a tremendous job of explaining this mystical machine over paper, the drawings really do bring it all to life.
The only thing you didn't seem to include is what you're using to hold the photos as they move through the machine? I see a few drawings using spools, and some that evidently use glass panes. Which will you end up using in the final invention?

<<set $brotherKill++>>\Out the window, you see the entire world flashing by. All its loveliness and downfalls.
You think about your debts, mounting ever more as you travel to Dijon. You think about all the trouble you've caused your family, coming back and forth from Europe to America, and the risky business of inventing.<<if $hasGun>> You think about the gun in your suitcase.<</if>>
You think about the speed of the train, and the forest terrain that's to come in the ride up ahead.
You get up, thinking about whether or not the back train to the door opens easily. It does.
You think, and [[then you don't|the end]].Out the window, you see the entire world flashing by. All its loveliness and downfalls.
You think about your debts, your family, your wife, Lizzy. You consider your motion picture machine, not yet ready for the public. But you're oh-so-close, if only Lizzie could understand that. You remember the fact that she's put her work on hold to prepare for you to present the machine in the States. You remember again that the machine isn't even ready yet.
A knock at your door breaks your train of thought. "Come in," you say without thinking. Two men stand in the doorway, two men you haven't seen before. At least, you don't think you've seen them before.
"Augustin?" They ask.
"Yes?" you say. You wonder who they are, and how they knew your name. You think about all these things, and [[then you don't|the end]].Out the window, you see the entire world flashing by. All its loveliness and downfalls.
You think about your debts, your motion picture machine, and Thomas Edison. You consider all the time you spend pondering him and his work, and how much time he must have spent pondering you and your machine.
You wander to the sleeper car, all the way in the back of the train. Just as you lean towards a window to see the scenery, you hear the door to the car slam shut. "A bit early for a sleep, don't you think?" you laugh.
"A bit late, I think," someone says.
You turn to face the stranger and they continue to stride toward you. "Hey, now," you say defensively. "I'm just here to get back to Leeds."
"Aren't we all?" they say, pushing you towards the back door of the train.
You start to panic but defenseless without your luggage. You wonder who this person is and who could of sent them, but all too quickly you [[can't think anymore|the end]].As you're looking out the window, your brother waves his arms frantically.
"Augustin!" he shouts. "Gus! Augustin!"
You blink in surprise, opening the compartment window. "What is it, Albert?"
"You //must// come back to the platform," he shouts.
You get up, walking towards the door of the train to hear him better. You lean out.
"On to the platform, Gus," Albert says, walking closer to you.
The train blows its horn and both of you are engulfed in steam. "It's about to leave, Albert. I can't just get off."
"Just for one moment, Augustin!" he pleads. "Don't you trust me?"
You consider everything up until this point. Hopping off the train for //just one moment//, you step closer to Albert.
He grabs you, and the last thing you see is the train leaving the station without you. You think, trying to figure it all out, and then you [[can't think anymore|the end]].And that's how it could have ended. In reality, we don't know for sure what happened to Augustin Le Prince nor his luggage from his final trip from Dijon. In fact, we're not even sure if he got on the train or not.

As for the specifics, all I know is that I'm //not// using plastic spindles with plastic film. An initial test proved very... smokey. As for the specifics, all I know is that I'm //not// using glass-covered gelatine frames. While that works for photography and other still-life imagery, the glass frames get jammed in the runner and occasionally break the machine, but more often than not break themselves as they crash to the floor.

As for the specifics, I genuinely don't know what I'll be using. While I seem to have most of the machine figured out, the most important piece is always the hardest. Isn't that how it goes?

Dear Thomas Edison,
What a pleasant correspondence! It is great to hear back from you.
And what an asuste question about the image protocol itself. Only a true inventor would have seen between the lines to notice I had not included that kind of information.
As for the specifics, I'm not sure I feel comfortable sharing. As you worked on important information before, I'm sure you understand what it's like to work on something you wish to keep to yourself before you're entirely ready.
Again, thank you for the kind reply and I hope we keep in touch.

Dear Thomas Edison,
You're being very forward, don't you think? I've already sent you so much material you could practically make a machine yourself, if you had the time and patience.
But perhaps //I'm// being too forward now. I appreciate your question about the projection of images already taken in a rapid fashion.

As for the specifics, all I know is that I'm //not// using plastic spindles with plastic film. An initial test proved very... smokey. The plastic cannot handle the high temperatures of the light needed to project the image, even for the short amount of time necessary to hold it in front of the screen.

<<set $brotherKill++>>\You walk over to Adolphe and he looks up from his work.
"Hey pop," he smiles up at you.
[["\"What're you working on there?\""|workshop talk Adolphe 1]]
[["\"How are you doing?\""|workshop talk Adolphe 2]]"What're you working on there?" you ask, leaning over to see his workspace better.
"Oh, remember you told me to work on the wooden spacers? I just finished sanding them down, so I'm putting them back into place, see?" Adolphe stands up and shows his handiwork.
There are countless nearly invisible bolts twisted to exactly the right angle, perfectly tight.
You pat your son on the shoulder and [[consider what to do next|workshop]]."How are you doing, son?"
"Oh, you know," he looks back at his work. "Trying my best to make this machine perform some real magic."
"So... you're doing okay?"
"Well... If I'm totally honest, I wish I was headed home-- er, to New York state, in America-- soon. I miss mom. Has she written? Do you know how she is?"
You pause.

<<set $familyKill-->>\"I haven't heard from her, actually," you say.
"Haven't heard from her? Surely she's written by now?" Adolphe repeats, concern filling his voice.
"Oh, but, I'm sure she's //fine//," you recover, remembering that this isn't your life and you actually aren't positive if your wife is doing well or not. Maybe you should read some letters or something to learn more. "Yes, I'm sure she's written. I'll... remember to check when I go back inside the house."
You watch as Adolphe calms down and slowly gets back to work. You really dodged a bullet there. You walk over to the main table in the workshop and [[consider what to do|workshop]].

<<back Return.>>You spend a very nice time in France. Although you could skip these few days like you've skipped around the last few weeks, you determine that the date is close enough to the newspaper clipping you read. You know something is going to happen soon.
You spend some time with the Wilsons before visiting your brother and his family in Dijon by yourself.
It's a lovely few days you spend with Albert and his family, waking up to the early French air and eating delicious food.
On your last day, you wake up with a pit in your stomach. You know today's the day-- you see the train timetable on the dresser.
Walking downstairs, you see Albert is there, reading the morning paper and sipping a drink.
[["\"Don't you think it's about time we discuss the will?\""|will Rude]]
[["\"Albert... I'd like to resolve the will, if you have time.\""|will Nice]]"Don't you think it's about time we discuss the will?" you demand. "I've already been here for a few days, I reckon it's about time."
"Oh, that's what //you// 'reckon', is it, Gus?" Albert sneers, looking at you over his paper. He takes a sip of orange juice. "It's all about you, isn't it?"
[[Take a deep breath.|will Rude 1]]
[["\"Well it ought to be, you've taken long enough.\""|will Rude 2]]"Albert... I'd like to resolve the will, if you have time," you say, stepping into the kitchen and sitting down at the kitchen table.
Albert looks over at you, folding his paper up. "You're right, Gus," he sighs. "I suppose we should talk about it."
[["\"I think we should split what's left 50/50.\""|will Nice 2]]
[["\"I think you should get everything that's left.\""|will Nice 3]]
[["\"I think I should get everything that's left.\""|will Nice 4]]You take a deep breath and compose yourself.
"You know, Albert," you say. "Perhaps we can solve this another time."
"Perhaps so," he says in a monotone voice, looking back at his paper. "Let me know when you've finally packed and are [[ready to leave|get on the train]]."
<<set $familyKill-->>\
<<set $edisonKill-->>\"Well it ought to be, you've taken long enough."
Albert puts his paper down to look you right in the eyes. "I've //taken// long enough? You expected that to get me to //help// you?"
"It's not just //helping me//, Albert. It's //executing our mother's will//."
Albert sits there silently, glaring at you. He doesn't speak to you for the rest of the afternoon and, after all that, you miss the morning train.
You [[head to the station in the mid-afternoon train|get on the train]], the car ride and subsequent drop off incredibly tense.

-write more letters for Edison & Albert.
-manage endings / fight with brother at the end (whether you're early/ontime/late to the train should be in the "get on the train" passage because of the brother kill ending, he kills you before you can even get on the train
-write workshop stuff for week 2
-write Adolphe week 2 dialogue
-make sure all inventory items are pushed (letters, misc, items in suitcase)
What I wanted to add to week 3:
if focused on Edison: you're been focusing too much on Edison
if focused on Family: you've been preoccupied with family affairs
if focused on Albert: you've been worrying so much about the will
if focused on machine: you've been too focused on your machine

<<back Return.>>"I think we should split what's left 50/50," you offer. "After all, that's what Mother wrote in her will."
<<if $brotherKill > 5>>\
"50/50?" Albert thinks on it for a moment. "I'm thinking more of a 60/40, in my favor. After all I've done, you know? I think that's what she really would have wanted."
You squint at your brother. "All you've... done?"
"With the will, with the family, with everything, you know."
You pause, considering his offer.

Albert stops reaching for his orange juice in surprise. "Everything? Mon dieu," he says.

"Well, d'accord," Albert says. "All right. I.. can't disagree with that. I just appreciate that you've taken all my work into consideration." Albert offers his hand and you take it, shaking on it.
"Now let's get you to the [[train station|get on the train]]."
<<set $brotherKill-=2>>

"Oh, Gus, I don't know about //all// of it. In fact, I was planning on splitting it with you, 60/40. I think you could still use a little money for your projects, no?"

<</if>>\"I think I should get everything that's left," you say.
Albert spits out the orange juice he just sipped. "You think you should get //how much//? Everything? Mon dieu," he laughs. "A funny joke, Gus. Mother left it as a 50/50 split, but I believe a 60/40 split is much more fair."
[["\"Fine.\""|will Nice 2-1]]
[["\"Absolutely not.\""|will Nice 2-2]]"Fine. 60/40 split it is," you say. "With you getting 60."

<<set $brotherKill-->>"Absolutely not," you say quickly. "Absolutely not! There's no way that's what mother would have wanted."
Albert snickers. "You think //you// knew what mother would have wanted? Is that why she made //you// the executor?"
You bite back harsher words. Looking at the clock you realize you're already late for the morning train.

"How are you this week?" you ask.
Adolphe shrugs. "I... don't know why you're asking about my whole //week//, considering it's only the beginning..."
"Oh, it's the start of the week?" you mumble to yourself.
"What was that?" Adolphe asks.
"Oh, nothing, uh. How are you these days?"
